Anderson Marsh State Historic Park is a California State Historic Park and nature reserve preserving a Tule marsh, archaeological sites of the Pomo people, and historic ranch structures. The park offers guided nature walks, followed by a tour of the Historic Ranch House Museum originally built in 1854. Lower Lake Historic Schoolhouse Museum, built in 1877 and restored in 1993, hosts a collection of local pioneer and Native American artifacts. Lower Lake Stone Jail, built in 1876, is claimed to be the smallest jail in the United States.
Lake County vineyards and wineries have their own unique history. In 1888, acclaimed British actress Lillie Langtry purchased 4,190 acres in Guenoc Valley near Middletown, which included vineyards that had been planted in 1854. She established the Guenoc & Langtry Estate Winery—today known as Langtry Estate & Vineyards—with their first vintage in 1891.!

Parks & Recreation
Lake County’s 29 parks offer diverse beauty and recreation for every outdoor enthusiast. Go bird watching, fishing, swimming, boating, or kayaking on beautiful Clear Lake, the oldest lake in North America. Hike or bicycle in scenic Boggs Mountain Demonstration State Forest, in Cobb. Join with others on a variety of nature walks focusing on wildflowers, herbs, and nature photography. Hike majestic Mt. Konocti, where there are now trails to take you all the way to the 4,300-foot summit. Enjoy any of several 9-hole golf courses located throughout the county. Schools, Colleges and Libraries
There are two excellent community colleges in Lake County: Yuba College-Clearlake Campus, and Mendocino College-Lake Center. In addition to the traditional public school system, Lake County is home to the tuition-free Lake County International Charter School, in Middletown. Among Lake County public schools, Cobb Mountain Elementary is acknowledged year after year as one of the best public schools in the state of California.
Wherever you live in Lake County, you’re close to a public library, as each city maintains its own library. And with interlibrary loan—not only within the Lake County library system, but in cooperation with neighboring counties, as well—it’s easy to find the book or other media you’re looking for.

Restaurants
Dining out in Lake County is far more varied than you might expect. There is the “down-home” American fare; Italian food and pizza; Irish, Mexican, Mediterranean, Thai, and Chinese repast; upscale and highly acclaimed restaurants such as The Sawmill in Kelseyville and Boar’s Breath in Middletown. There are coffee shops and ice cream parlors. There is, of course, fast food. And there are the Tasting Rooms at many of Lake County’s fine wineries, located all across the county. In other words, you’ll always have plenty of options when you want to go out to eat.
For the wine aficionado, the Lake County Wine Studio (LCWS), located in historic Upper Lake just across the street from the restored Tallman Hotel, offers a true taste of Lake County wine country. Hard-to-find artisan wines from over 35 select local producers are available for tasting and sale.

Shopping
Around the Lake, there are many locally owned businesses that showcase local artists, and regional foods and gifts. Each city offers something different and unique to the shopper, both for their own needs and for finding that perfect gift. Everything from vintage jewelry, beading supplies and antiques, to movies, books, tools, collectibles, and clothing, is available.
The Lake County Chamber of Commerce has a program, “Shop, Stay and Play,” (http://www.shopstayplay.com) that provides a listing of all the county businesses, encouraging residents and visitors alike to buy locally and support the local economy.
If you want variety as well as a great deal, Lake County has several thrift shops. The Hospice Thrift Shops in both Clearlake and Lakeport offer a wide selection of items at the lowest prices imaginable. The Goodwill Store in Lakeport is another of the many shops where variety meets savings.

Sports
The Lake County sports scene for fans focuses primarily on its high school athletics. Lakeport, Kelseyville, Middletown, Lower Lake, Upper Lake, Clearlake—all maintain high school sports teams. A number of high school games are broadcast over the radio; there is a lot of excitement as the locals root for the home team.
If you like to shoot, there are gun stores in the area. You can join a gym. Or learn martial arts. Play at one of the 9-hole golf courses in the county. Or play a round of miniature golf. There are many opportunities to participate in both play and spectator sports in Lake County.
